Ingredient Notes:

  • Coleslaw mix. I used a bag of coleslaw mix from the store. I like to keep a bag handy in the fridge to whip up this easy salad in a pinch!
  • Kraft Miracle Whip. This is the base for the tangy homemade dressing. Miracle Whip has a sweeter, tangier flavor than regular mayonnaise. You can also Learn how to make your own Miracle Whip or make homemade mayonnaise.
  • Half-and-half. This is 10% milk fat. It makes this simple side dish super creamy.
  • Sugar. I used a little bit of cane sugar to sweeten the dressing up a bit.

See the printable recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Miracle Whip: Use regular mayo, low-fat mayo, fat-free mayonnaise, or avocado mayo.
  • Coleslaw mix: Yes, I took a shortcut using a mix. However, the flavor is much better if you use fresh ingredients. You can shred or finely chop green cabbage, red cabbage or purple cabbage, and carrots. Run the vegetables through a shredder or food processor to make this process faster.
  • Half-and-half: Use sour cream, plain Greek yogurt, or regular milk instead.
  • Sweet: I used cane sugar, but feel free to use your favorite sweetener. You can also add diced apples or cranberries with a splash of maple syrup.
  • Crunchy: Add a sprinkle of celery seeds or sunflower seeds.
  • Make a traditional coleslaw recipe with mayonnaise instead.
  • Optional add-ins: Feel free to add garlic powder, celery seeds, chopped green onions, a splash of lemon juice, black pepper, chopped red onion, Dijon mustard, or spicy brown mustard.

Step 4: Transfer the tangy coleslaw to a serving bowl. Serve immediately, or cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge until ready to use. Serving Suggestions

This mayo coleslaw is the perfect side dish to serve with hot dogs, Smoked Sausage on Pellet Grill, Electric Smoker Brisket, or Brisket on Pellet Grill.

I also like to serve this homemade slaw with Grilled Smashed Burgers or Pellet Smoker Burgers, Smoked 3-2-1 Ribs, Smoked Chuck Roast, and Smoked Pork Loin Roast.

Serve alongside fish tacos made with Air Fryer Tilapia, in a Smoked Pulled Pork Sandwich, or Pellet Smoked Whole Chicken.

Expert Tips

  • Use fresh vegetables - firm, crisp cabbage without browning or wilting around the edges. Avoid cabbage that is soft to the touch or has brown leaves.
  • Remove damaged outer leaves from the cabbage. Cut the whole cabbage in half, then slice it into thin strips. If you're using pre-shredded cabbage, rinse it under cold water.
  • Taste as you go, and add more sugar to the creamy coleslaw dressing with Miracle Whip.
  • Let the slaw sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving. The longer it sits the more flavorful it will become.

Storage Instructions

Serve immediately or place in the fridge in an airtight container or cover it with plastic wrap. Eat the salad within two days. The longer it sits, the softer the cabbage and carrots get, and the dressing soaks into each piece. I think it tastes best on the second day, but that's just my opinion. 😉
