GIS@ASU is kicking off its monthly D&I social media series with a discussion on the barriers faced by Black and Hispanic/Latino candidates throughout the stages of the actuarial career pipeline. In the initial stages of the pipeline, many minority students don’t gain awareness of the actuarial profession early on; only 12 out of 100 Black or Hispanic/Latino college freshman had heard of it. One way GIS@ASU students can be an active part of the process to mitigate this barrier is by helping GIS@ASU connect with high schools to host an outreach event and introduce students to the profession! With employment and retention being another barrier towards a diverse actuarial field, between bias in hiring practices and subconscious discrimination in workplace culture, an inclusive environment is vital to making the actuarial profession more diverse. While many GIS@ASU students are still in an academic environment rather than working full-time in the actuarial domain, one of the best ways to set a foundation for an inclusive environment in the workforce is by promoting one within our chapter and everyday lives. Educating yourself and working towards overcoming your unconscious biases, along with using inclusive language like proper pronunciation of names, are great first steps to take in creating an inclusive environment. We would love to hear from you; let us know other actions you can and will take to make an impact and promote a more diverse actuarial field in the comments!#GammaSAID #GammaIotaSigma #ArizonaStateUniversity

The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) recently hosted the annual Case Study Competition at Arizona State University’s Gamma Iota Sigma Kappa Chapter (GIS at ASU). This competition provides students with the opportunity to tackle real-world actuarial challenges. Four teams competed on March 26th, working on a Property & Casualty (P&C) related challenge to create insightful reports for a fictional insurance firm. Each team had 15 minutes to present their findings to a panel of judges from the P&C insurance industry, followed by a Q&A session. Team Statistically Significant emerged as the winners, with Chief Actuaries securing second place. GIS at ASU thanks CAS, the judges, and all participating students for their contributions.

Midterms loom and spring break beckons, so members gathered to destress and explore STEM accessibility with Piece of the Pi. Hosted by GIS at ASU, the event featured Ainsley Ramsey, Noel Steinbeck, Olivia Braymiller, Gina Gilkey, and Brisa Silis Gomez from POTP, who shared their mission and fundraising goals. POTP aims to raise $15,000 this year for scholarships and STEM programs, with events like a Panel Professionals gathering and support for initiatives like Fund-A-Bus and Girls in STEM. To contribute, one can buy merchandise, donate via GoFundMe or Venmo, or participate in local activities like HeyDay Skincare or REV’D Indoor Cycling. Ainsley Ramsey dazzled with a recitation of the first 500 digits of pi, capping off a day of relaxation and camaraderie. Thanks to POTP for their insight and dedication to STEM, and to GIS at ASU members for organizing the event.
