How to Make Steak and Gravy in a Crock Pot

Aunt Lou here.

So we all know that in this house we are suckers for a great deal on meat. Well, our freezer is still completely packed, so when Michael found a good deal on a flat iron steak, I needed to use it right up.

I saw this Slow Cooker Steak with Gravy recipe from Gooseberry Patch’sSpeedySlow-Cooker Recipes and was a little leery. You see, to say I am a picky eater would be quite the understatement. However, I married a human garbage disposal who loves anything and everything except peas (Go figure?). So I thought I would give it a try since it sounded like something Michael would love.

I am so very glad that I did! Roast is my all time favorite, but finding a good roast on sale is next to impossible. With this recipe, our flat iron steak tasted like a juicy, delicious roast! Mommy score!

I haven’t tried this with a different cream soup, but I think that cream of celery might work well. The flavor would change a bit, but since you don’t like mushrooms, that might not be a bad thing! If you give it a try, let me know how it turns out!

I haven’t made this with any other soup. You might try out homemade cream soup recipe. (https://www.recipesthatcrock.com/cream-soup-substitute-recipes/). If you want to try a canned soup, you might try cream of celery. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!

I haven’t tried this with eye round steaks, but think it could work. This recipe is really good at making meat super tender. I haven’t froze this after cooking. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes. If you are asking if you can use frozen meat, health experts recommend thawing all meat before cooking in a slow cooker.

Could I substitute chuck roast in this recipe? I remember a recipe from years ago that used a roast and the same ingredients, wrapped the whole thing in foil and baked in the oven. It was so good.

Can’t honestly rate this recipe, but it looks delicious. My problem is I watched the video a few days ago, and thought I could remember it……….NOPE. I have it in the crock pot now backwards (onion soup packet and the canned soup). I don’t know why it wouldn’t taste the same. Here’s hoping.

FAQs

How much liquid do you put in a slow cooker for steak? ›

Do you add water when cooking meat in a slow cooker? If your slow cooker is 3/4 full, no extra liquid is required. However, if you're cooking a smaller amount of food, add 1-2cm of liquid in the bottom of the slow cooker bowl to ensure there's enough liquid for cooking.

Do you brown steak before putting in crockpot? ›

Brown Meat to Boost Flavor

If you have a few extra minutes when preparing anything in a slow cooker, try browning your meat before adding it to the cooker. It boosts the flavor and color of any dish, but can be skipped if you're in a hurry.

Is it OK to cook steak in a slow cooker? ›

Yes! Slow cooked steak is a wonderful way to make savory and tender fillets each time.

Should meat be submerged in liquid in slow cooker? ›

To keep a pot roast from drying out, your slow cooker needs liquid to create a moist environment, and that can include meat or vegetable stock, wine or water. This doesn't mean the meat should be submerged; a cup or two of liquid will be enough, since the cooker is covered and liquids stay trapped inside.

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low in a slow cooker? ›

The difference is the time it takes to reach that temperature. Low: 7-8 hours to reach the simmer point. High: 3-4 hours to reach the simmer point.

What happens if you don't sear meat before slow cooking? ›

"Browning, or caramelizing, meat before putting it into a slow cooker isn't 100 percent necessary, but it is well worth the effort for the most flavorful and full-bodied end result," he says. "The caramelized surface of the meat will lend rich flavor and color to the finished dish."

Why do you have to flour meat before slow cooking? ›

Use flour to thicken sauces

Just as the the liquid doesn't reduce, it also doesn't thicken. You can roll meat in a small amount of seasoned flour before adding it to the slow cooker or use a little cornflour at the end.

Should meat or vegetables go in the crockpot first? ›

Fill the crock pot at least half full and no more than two-thirds full. Thaw frozen meats and vegetables before placing in the crock pot. Place dense vegetables in crock pot first, such as carrots and potatoes, since they take longer than meats to cook.

Is chuck or gravy beef better for slow cooking? ›

Chuck steak is probably the most economical cut of beef. The chuck is found around the neck and shoulder, so it contains some connective tissue and fat that will melt down during long slow cooks and give your dish a rich, robust flavour.

What is gravy beef best for? ›

Gravy beef is a cut that comes from three main areas; the hind leg and the front leg (also known as shin) plus the neck area. It is rich in flavour and is traditionally used with the bone in for excellent stews and soups.

Is gravy beef the same as chuck steak? ›

The most common beef used for stew is chuck steak, also known as gravy beef or braising steak. Beef chuck comes from the forequarter of the animal consisting of parts of the neck, shoulder blade and upper arm. It is easy to find and it's affordable, making it a great choice for your stew.

How long can you leave steak in the slow cooker? ›

You can add more than one steak to the crock pot, but make sure they fit in a single layer. Cook on low for four to six hours, or until the internal temperature reaches your desired doneness (here's a steak temperature guide to help you with that).

Why was my steak dry in slow cooker? ›

The most likely cause of this is overcooking. As meat cooks, its muscle fibers shorten in both length and width and eventually squeeze out the juices they normally hold. As you can imagine, this leaves meat dry, and often stringy in texture. To avoid this problem, choose less-tender cuts of meat.

Does beef get more tender the longer you cook it in a slow cooker? ›

Slow cooking methods unlock the flavors and tenderize the meat, transforming what was once tough into a tender, flavorful meal.

How much liquid should I put in my slow cooker? ›

Water or liquid is necessary to create steam. When cooking meat or poultry, the water or liquid level should cover the ingredients to ensure effective heat transfer throughout the crock. Some manufacturers of slow cookers recommend adding liquid to fill the stoneware 1/2 to 3/4 full.

How much water do I put in a slow cooker with beef? ›

I'd say about a cup and a half to two cups. You need enough water to make steam to cook the meat and brisket is a tough cut so it needs a long cooking time. After it's cooked, you can take the liquid out and let it cook down to about half and make gravy.

Should you put more or less liquid in a slow cooker? ›

5. Reduce liquid when using a slow cooker. Because your slow cooker will have a tightly sealed lid, the liquid won't evaporate so if you're adapting a standard recipe, it's best to reduce the liquid by roughly a third. It should just cover the meat and vegetables.

How much water is needed for a steak? ›

Beef production is very water intensive. Producing just one kilogram of beef requires over 15,000 litres of water. Meaning, 3,000 litres of water are needed to produce one 200-gram dinner steak. This is equal to 6,000 bottles of water (at 500 millilitres per bottle).
